Jasmine Performs at Girl Scouts Cultural Event

On June 9th, Jasmine representatives Alice, Cindy, and Daphne received the opportunity to perform 3 dances and to teach the Girl Scouts an original fan dance. Over the course of the day they performed for over 200 campers and were able to teach all of them the basics of Chinese fan dancing. The opportunity was an overall success and taught them all valuable lessons on how to spread Chinese culture, but also on how to be good role models for younger girls.

Alice shares her thoughts on working with Girl Scouts, saying "Getting to work with Girl Scouts was an amazing experience! I loved seeing how enthusiastic the girls were to watch and learn traditional Chinese dances, and this opportunity really showed me the power of sharing and celebrating diverse cultures. Everyone was so engaged and gave their best effort when learning. The Girl Scouts staff who invited us to perform were incredibly kind and thoughtful, making sure we had everything we needed. I’m also especially grateful I had Cindy and Daphne with me, especially when we were teaching dances, because I know I couldn’t have done it without them. I hope everyone at Girl Scouts enjoyed our performance because I know I enjoyed meeting them!"

The first dance performed was Jiu Er by Alice and Daphne, which is a fan dance that uses raw emotion and graceful moves to convey the sad farewell of Jiu Er. The dance was received well by all the girls as they watched the older girls perform.

Cindy also shares, "This cultural demonstration has truly been unforgettable! I loved working with Daphne and Alice to put together our interactive dance, and this experience has taught me so much about teaching dance!

Our sessions with the girl scouts were my first time teaching such a large group, so I was honestly pretty nervous going into it. However, my concerns quickly dissipated after meeting these amazing girls! All of the girl scouts were so bright and polite, and I feel so fortunate to have worked with them!"

The second performance was the Han Flute Dance by Cindy which featured a wooden flute. This dance also captivated the little girls sitting in the audience through the uplifting music and the spirit of the performance.

Daphne also recalls that, "Working with Girl Scouts was a new experience for me, but it allowed me to grow as a leader and a performer. I have never worked with this many girls at a time, but it let me see how important leadership is for young girls. It felt great to be a role model for them and to give them a taste of Chinese dance and culture. Overall working with the coordinators from Girl Scouts and the entire arrangement of the performance was a smooth and simple process that allowed Jasmine to perform for a new audience and hopefully inspire younger generations to engage in their own acts of community service!"

The third dance was a peacock-inspired dance called Blessings and Good Fortune by Alice and Daphne. This dance featured long dresses that resemble a peacock with its feathers and allowed young girls to view a performance that featured beat changes and changes in rhythm.

These event allowed these young girls to experience the joy of Chinese dance while also learning dance through an original interactive dance created by Alice, Daphne, and Cindy. Each girl was given a fan to perform with, and Alice, Cindy and Daphne got to teach the motions and go through the dance with all the girls. All the girls really enjoyed getting to learn the basics of Chinese fan dance!

The event was not only a reflection of the leadership skills from these older girls, but it also was a reflection of the eagerness of younger generations to learn more about not only Chinese culture, but also the impact of community service through friendship. Girl Scouts is an organization that does a good job of promoting these virtues, and their invitation for Jasmine to perform is a reflection on the positive impact of the group. Overall the experience was a good leadership opportunity for the older girls and really captured the joy of performing and spreading Chinese culture!
