Recently, on August 16th, four dancers represented Jasmine by performing at the Lawrence Public Library Multicultural Fair. This event gave an opportunity for many people to learn about diverse communities, such as Chinese culture. Jasmine performed a total of three dances: Jiu Er (九儿), Elephant King Marching (象王行), and Dancing Peacock (灵). Each dance showed a unique aspect of Chinese tradition, from storytelling through movement to the graceful use of props and costumes.

The first dance is called Jiu Er, performed by Daphne Valenta and Alice Chen. This dance depicts Jiu Er's story, a young woman who yearns her desire for freedom and true love. Daphne and Alice captured the story of Jiu Er with a draping fan and a cloth. These two props contribute significantly to the narrative power of Chinese dance.

Following Jiu Er (九儿) was Elephant King Marching (象王行), a solo performed by Sophia Yu. This dance comes from music composed by Guan Dazhou for National Treasure. The elephant is used as a symbol of wisdom and strength, showing both power and beauty. The movements are balanced and gentle, while the rhythm and formation feel like those of a strong leader, highlighting order and control. The dance combines tradition with modern style, expressing confidence in today’s culture. It also shows the unity of personal skill and group spirit, symbolizing how wisdom and strength come together in harmony to achieve great things.

And the final dance was Dancing Peacock (灵), performed by Katie. This dance showcased the swift and elegant motions of a peacock. It is also particularly popular among the Dai ethnic minority in Yunnan, and symbolizes beauty, happiness, and prosperity.

This multicultural event was warmly received by the audience, and opened doors for appreciation for Chinese heritage. The Jasmine Chinese Dance Group (堪萨斯茉莉花舞蹈团) is proud to have helped build cultural understanding and connections within the community. We are thankful for the opportunity to be invited to the Lawrence Public Library Multicultural Fair, and to share Chinese culture with the community!
